Through Living the Legacy service-learning program, The Frances Xavier Warde School honors our namesake, Mother Frances Xavier Warde. A sister of Mercy from Ireland, Mother Warde came to Chicago to serve the neediest communities. Service learning is an important aspect of our students’ experiential education and a foundational part of FXW’s curriculum Preschool-Grade 8. Projects are closely tied to our mission and allow students opportunities to develop their awareness of populations in need, while building skills of empathy and social responsibility. In addition, students will identify a service opportunity that will then become a school wide effort to support the community in need.

One of the goals of Living the Legacy is to provide FXW students with a way to make positive change in the community, while also showing them that they can make a difference in the world around them. Another goal is to enhance students’ awareness of community and global needs and the ways they can engage as active citizens, knowing their ideas and actions can make a difference.

Throughout a students’ time at FXW, they will Live the Legacy of Mother Warde through the following service opportunities:

Preschool and Kindergarten: Hunger and poverty through Blessings in a Backpack
Grade 1: Poverty through Catholic Extension Society
Grade 2: Adults and children with special needs through Misericordia
Grade 3: Veterans through Jesse Brown VA Hospital
Grade 4: Chicago’s Homeless through House of Mary and Joseph and Night Ministry
Grade 5: Poverty through Cradles to Crayons
Grade 6: Elderly through Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly
Grades 7 and 8: 10-15 required hours of service and FXW Day of Service events
All School: St. Eulalia Thanksgiving Drive for 750 parishioners and many more
