Election of Pope Leo XIV

The Frances Xavier Warde School Statement on the Election of Pope Leo XIV

The Frances Xavier Warde School joyfully celebrates the historic naming of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV—formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a proud son of Chicago and a shining example of faith in action—as the first American to ascend to the papacy.

As a school rooted in Catholic values and committed to nurturing compassionate, courageous leaders, we are deeply inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s life of service, scholarship, and spiritual leadership. His Chicago roots, combined with his global ministry, exemplify the power of local faith communities to shape voices of enduring impact on the world stage.

With the enduring partnership of the Children at the Crossroads Foundation, whose support for financial aid helps ensure access to an FXW education, we foster a socio-economically diverse community that echoes Pope Leo XIV’s lifelong commitment to inclusion and service.

“Each morning at FXW, our students begin the day by reciting the Prayer of St. Francis—’Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.'” said Michael Kennedy, FXW Head of School. In Pope Leo XIV, we see a living embodiment of that prayer. He is a humble bridge builder, a man of hope, and a servant leader deeply committed to the common good. In a time when our world longs for unity, compassion, peace and justice, Pope Leo represents the very best of what thoughtful, faithful leadership can look like.

“As his dear friend shared, ‘Pope Leo understands the importance of service and doing all good things for the common good.’ The FXW students are buzzing with excitement and pride, knowing that someone who shares their their commitment to service, their values—and even their hometown—now leads the global Church. This moment brings great joy to our community and a deep sense of hope for what lies ahead.”

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Pope Leo XIV and join with the Church and the city of Chicago in prayer and gratitude for this moment of hope and unity. May his papacy be marked by wisdom, peace, and a deep commitment to justice and mercy.
